dc.description.abstract This research is entitled “The influence of debate on English speaking skills in the Lower Level of Secondary School. Its main objective is to examine the role of debate activities in the English-speaking proficiency of lower-level secondary school students in Rulindo District.To achieve this objective, different techniques, namely questionnaire and interview were used to gather needed information. Quantitative, comparative and synthetical methods were used to analyze and interpret findings. In this regard, 72 respondents (4 ) school leaders, 11 teachers and 57students) were surveyed. Findings revealed different benefits of participating in debates including but not limited to acquiring speaking skills, improving critical thinking skills, structuring thoughts in a good way, increasing retention of information learned and enhancing teamwork skills and collaboration. In addition, some challenges are faced such as anxiety and nervousness, limited language proficiency, limited research skills and time constraints. Some strategies to improve oral skills in English as proposed by the surveyed respondents include providing practice opportunities, offering constructive feedback, developing learners’ critical thinking skills and providing language support.Students were recommended to give value to English, the medium of instruction and the official language and make efforts in practicing through deferent techniques to learn and improve the oral skills in English. Teachers were recommended to define clear learning objectives for debate activities in English learning and help students make real-world connections through debate. School leaders were recommended to create and promote a supportive environment by promoting an environment where innovative teaching methods, such as debate, are encouraged and value en_US
