Abstract:
Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a global health burden with
associated high mortality and morbidity. Early detection help tremendously at
improving the general condition of the patient, however due to paucity of
knowledge, diabetes is the main causative agent of CKD (Mmampu, 2016).
Problem statement: Despite the fact that CKD can be prevented, lack of
knowledge concerning preventive measures of CKD for diabetic patients is still
problematic. Therefore the sole objective to this study is assessing the Knowledge,
Attitude and Practice (KAP) of diabetic patients in regards to Kidney diseases for
avoidance of worsening progression to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and/or its
prevention.
Significance of the study. This study will provide a baseline for further research
regarding CKD and will help in raising awareness concerning CKD prevention.
Main objective
The objective is the assessment of KAP in regards to prevention of kidney diseases
of diabetic patients at the Rwanda Diabetic Association (RDA) located at Kinamba
clinic.
Methodology.
A quantitative cross sectional study with convenience sampling on a sample of 132
Diabetic patients at RDA Kinamba clinic was done. Descriptive statistics for
frequencies and percentages for demographic information and analysis was done
using mann whitney U test and Kruskal wallis to test for association between
demographic information and KAP regarding CKD prevention.
Results.
132 patients were enrolled in this study of which 54% were young <30 years and
the majority were females 53% while 59% had moderate knowledge regarding
CKD prevention ,35.6% had high level of knowledge and 5.3% had a low level of
knowledge. Respondents showed some positive attitudes regarding CKD
prevention with significant statistical differences for different groups. Practices
regarding CKD prevention were found with some correct practices
Conclusion.
Participants had moderate knowledge, positive attitudes and to some extent
followed correct practices regarding CKD prevention.
