Abstract:
his mixed-methods study aimed to assess the accommodation of learners with hearing difficulties
in Nyamasheke District, Rwanda. Despite efforts towards inclusive education, learners with
hearing impairments continue to face barriers in accessing quality education. The study objectives
were to examine the tools/resources used, teaching approaches employed, and the role of
technology and assistive devices in facilitating effective communication and learning for these
learners.
The research utilized questionnaires, interviews, and observation checklists to collect data from
teachers, learners, and head teachers. Quantitative findings revealed the widespread use of visual
aids, but highlighted the absence of essential tools such as smartboards, cochlear implants, and
lesson transcripts. Teaching approaches included the use of sign language, visual instruction,
written communication, and interactive learning, but the incorporation of assistive technologies
was limited. Qualitative insights indicated varying proficiency levels in sign language among
teachers, concerns regarding the availability and functionality of assistive devices, and the need
for ongoing teacher training.
The study identified significant gaps, including the lack of access to key tools and resources,
inconsistent availability and use of assistive technologies across classrooms, and the need for
professional development opportunities for teachers. Recommendations encompass the acquisition
of essential tools, provision of ongoing teacher training, development of individualized education
plans, collaboration with specialists and families, and advocacy for inclusive education policies
and practices.
To effectively accommodate learners with hearing difficulties, a comprehensive approach
involving all stakeholders is necessary. By addressing the identified gaps and implementing the
recommended strategies, educational institutions in Nyamasheke District can create a more
inclusive and equitable learning environment that supports the academic success and overall well being of these learners. Future research should explore the long-term impact of accommodations,
examine the perspectives of parents and caregivers, investigate effective professional development
models, and conduct comparative studies to identify best practices in inclusive education for
learners with hearing difficulties.
