Abstract:
This study assessed the contribution of the RYVCP in preventing crimes in Rwanda using Musanze district. It also highlighted the challenges faced by the RYVCP in crime reduction. The descriptive qualitative study used phenomenological approach to collect, analyse and present data. The participant’s population consisted of 30 total individuals from the RYVCP, RNP, RIB, and local authorities. Purposive, cluster and convenience sampling techniques were used to select and reach to the respondents. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, constant comparative and thematic analysis and presented narratively.
Results indicated that a variety of crimes existed, RYVCP contribution to crime reduction included raising awareness on the dangers of the crimes, reported crimes to the authorities, and their main challenges included lack of communication facilitation and the release of criminals without prosecution. It was concluded that the RYVCP significantly contributed to the crime reduction in the Musanze District. The implications of the study are that it adds new knowledge to the existing literature on using youth on the community policing and informs policy on how to improve community policing and crime prevention in Rwanda, District of Musanze. The study suggested recommendations for effective RYVCP participation in community policing.
