Abstract:
Birth asphyxia is the third cause of mortality worldwide. It occurs during labor and delivery when fetal
lack perfusion of oxygen to the brain and other organs. The quality improvement project was implemented
at KIBAGABAGA hospital in order to decrease the rate of birth asphyxia according to Strategic Problem Solving approach.
To decrease the rate of birth asphyxia in KIBAGABAGA Hospital from 12.7% to 6% from December to
march 2023.
The study was a pre and post study design. The root cause analysis was conducted where workload was
identified as root cause of birth asphyxia. Staff on call was identified as the best solution. For analysis,
Microsoft Excel and Microsoft word were used for data entry and tabulation respectively and analysis
was done by using SPSS V.20 to determine the level of significance. Chi Square test was used to compare
the pre- and post-intervention of occurancy of birth asphyxia where P≤0.05.
Results: The rate of birth asphyxia was 12.7% pre intervention and reduced to 6% post intervention where
P value is value is 0.01
Conclusion and recommendations
The rate of birth Asphyxia reduced up 6 % following the interventions done, the hospital management is
recommended to regularly put in place strong teams of health workers especially staff on call that will
manage this fatal disease to new born. Partogram with good quality content of information should always
be available and completed correctly in the maternity wards. Regular surveys related to fight birth v
asphyxia should be conducted in order to contain its occurrence. Similar interventions should be
conducted in other hospitals
