Abstract:
The Nyabugogo River catchment in Rwanda is seriously threatened by soil erosion and sedimentation, which has far-reaching effects on ecosystem health, water quality, and agriculture. The purpose of this study was to assess how well bamboo buffers, a naturally occurring solution, can lessen these environmental problems in the Gatsata sub-catchment. To give a thorough grasp of the effects and potential of bamboo buffers, the research used a multimodal approach that included community surveys, visual assessments, and environmental monitoring. According to the study's findings, bamboo buffers are essential for improving bank stability, lowering erosion, and retaining sediment near riverbanks. The catchment's overall water quality has improved as a result of these effects. The outcomes of the study highlight the potential of bamboo buffers as a practical and long-lasting solution for problems with soil erosion and sedimentation in the area.
Different communities’ levels of awareness about the advantages and application of bamboo buffers were found in surveys that were carried out as part of the study. This research emphasizes the necessity of stepping up outreach and education initiatives to encourage local stakeholders to comprehend and embrace this natural solution. The study highlights the need for more investigation and community involvement even as it shows the potential of bamboo buffers in reducing erosion and sedimentation. To maximize the use of bamboo buffers and guarantee their long-term efficacy in sustainable watershed management, these extra efforts are required. Important new information about nature-based erosion control solutions is added by this research to the expanding body of knowledge. In Rwanda and other comparable contexts, the results hold great significance for practitioners and policymakers who aim to advance sustainable land management practices. This work supports the creation of practical solutions to problems with soil erosion and sedimentation while fostering ecosystem health and agricultural sustainability by offering evidence-based recommendations.
