Abstract:
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems have become a cornerstone in modern healthcare, promising improved patient care, streamlined processes, and enhanced data management. While numerous studies have investigated EMR implementation in urban healthcare settings, there remains a dearth of research focused on the experiences of rural health facilities, which often operate under unique challenges and resource constraints.
Aim: The goal of the present research study was to carry out an assessment of the experiences faced by healthcare professionals` in implementing electronic medical records.
Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with healthcare providers, data managers, and IT personnel to gather rich insights into their experiences with EMR implementation. Thematic analysis of the interview data revealed several critical themes that emerged as significant challenges and facilitators during the implementation process. Permission to conduct the study was approved by the ethics committee of the University of Rwanda, the College of Health Sciences, and the hospital.
Results: The results of the study revealed several key findings. Firstly, the lack of network connectivity and power cuts were identified as significant barriers to EMR implementation in rural areas. Secondly, the study highlighted the importance of staff training and computer literacy in ensuring the effective utilization of EMR systems. Adequate training and support were found to enhance healthcare providers' confidence and competence in using EMR. Lastly, the study emphasized the benefits of EMR implementation, including improved efficiency in providing patient care, reduced patient waiting times, and enhanced continuity of care.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that while EMR implementation has the ability to enhance patient care, enhance data management, and streamline medical procedures, there are notable issues that need to be resolved. Those challenges consist of issues related to infrastructure, staff attitudes, training, interoperability, data management, and organizational factors. Understanding these challenges is crucial in designing effective strategies to ensure the successful integration and sustained use of EMR in rural health facilities.
