Abstract:
Background: CKD has many different complications which includes kidney failure,
cardiovascular diseases, and premature death. CKD has grown to be a serious public health
issue which is highly increasing in the world’s population. CKD main risk factors are
hypertension and diabetes, so by raising the awareness of its risk factors and preventive
measures among the community will reduce CKD prevalence in the world’s population
Objectives: To determine the level of awareness among adults in Nyamirambo sector
regarding chronic kidney disease risk factors and preventive measures.
Methodology: This is a quantitative study, which used a cross-sectional design, total
population sampling technique was used to get adult participants with hypertension and
diabetes from Nyamirambo sector. Data was collected using a self-administered
questionnaire to investigate awareness toward: demographic information, chronic kidney
disease risk factors, and preventive measures.
Data analysis: The data were displayed using frequency and percentage in tables after being
descriptively analysed and numerically coded using SPSS Software Version number 23.
Results: The results showed that although 59.2% of study participants were aware of the risk
factors for CKD, only 32.4% chose to avoid its risk factors. According to the results, there is
no significant association between sociodemographic characteristics and awareness of CKD
risk factors and preventive measures (p-value >0.05), but there is a significant association
between practicing CKD preventive measures and marital status and educational level (p value<0.05).
Conclusion: The findings suggest a need for intervention aimed at improving awareness and
education on CKD among people with hypertension and diabetes due to their greater risk of
getting CKD
