Abstract:
Introduction: Access to pharmaceutical services, healthcare products, and reliable health information plays a crucial role in promoting public health and well-being. However, various barriers hinder individuals from accessing these essential resources, including geographical limitations, limited availability of healthcare professionals, and inadequate dissemination of health information. This study aims to address these challenges by developing a digital platform called "DOTPHARMA" that aims to improve access to pharmaceutical services, healthcare products, and health information.
Goal: To evaluate, create, and initiate the trial of a digital platform with the aim of enhancing accessibility to pharmaceutical and healthcare services.
Methods: The research used a quantitative approach to create and pilot test DOTPHARMA. A literature review identified key features, strengths, and weaknesses of existing systems. A multidisciplinary team then designed the platform, involving healthcare professionals, software developers, and user experience experts where 160 participants from NCD association and National disabilities' organization members in Rwanda seeking pharmaceutical services in April 2023 were used as sample size.
Results: Feedback from 159 individuals (age range 18-59 years; 63 males, 93 females), who tested the app over 30 days, confirmed that DOTPHARMA, is a comprehensive pharmaceutical digital platform that can encompass a diverse range of services to cater to the needs of its users. 139 individuals (n=159) responded positively, demonstrating a willingness to adapt to the innovative platform, whereas 20 respondents (12.5%) indicated a negative inclination. Among the 160 respondents (n=159), 68.8% reported having been acquainted with the platform for less than three months, indicating a significant portion of recent users. On the other hand, 30.6% of the participants stated that they have been familiar with the platform for more than three months, suggesting a smaller yet substantial group of long-term users.
In conclusion, the development and pilot testing of the DOTPHARMA platform aimed to address the existing gaps in access to pharmaceutical services, healthcare products, and health information. By leveraging digital technologies, this platform has the potential to enhance healthcare access, empower individuals to make informed health decisions, and ultimately improve the service delivery in healthcare systems.
